Innovation starts here.
The Tech Exploration Lab is where real-world problems meet emerging technology and become real innovation and ventures. It’s led by the Wisconsin School of Business and the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery at UW–Madison, and is open to every discipline: business, engineering, medicine, design, and beyond.
That mix is the point. Business students learn by doing. Technical students get grounded in real problems. Everyone gets a shot at real traction, Not a simulation, not a case study, but an actual idea or an actual industry problem put to the test.
We’re applied, not theoretical. We build, we test, we translate running as an early-stage activation engine, where a technical idea gets its first commercial stress test and a business insight gets its first technical proof of concept.
That works because of who shows up. Industry partners get a low-risk way to explore emerging tech and build a talent pipeline, by bringing us real problems instead of hypotheticals. Alumni come back in one of two ways — bringing their own ventures to the Lab, or mentoring the students building theirs. And students get more than a connection to those partners: they get programs, mentorship, and hands-on experimentation to find out whether their own idea is actually worth building.
No other place on campus brings all of that together.
