From Factory Data to AI: A Hands-On Workshop + Hackathon with Xorbix

Real innovation doesn’t start with theory. It starts with real problems.

On March 14, the UW Tech Exploration Lab is partnering with Xorbix Technologies to host a hands-on workshop and hackathon exploring how manufacturing data can be transformed into analytics and AI-driven insights.

Students will work directly with engineers from Xorbix to learn how production data flows through modern data platforms like Databricks, and how those pipelines ultimately power dashboards, analytics, and machine learning systems.

The day begins with a practical, applied workshop covering how operational data is ingested, modeled, and turned into meaningful metrics. In the afternoon, participants will move into a guided hackathon, where teams will explore how analytics and AI could support real operational decisions in a manufacturing-style scenario.

Students might explore questions like:

  • What patterns in factory data signal equipment downtime?

  • How can analytics help identify quality issues earlier?

  • What kinds of dashboards help operators make better decisions?

  • Could an AI assistant help monitor production systems?

Teams will present their ideas at the end of the event, with cash prizes awarded for the top pitches.

This event is designed to be small, interactive, and hands-on, giving students the opportunity to collaborate with peers across disciplines and get exposure to how modern companies actually work with data and AI.

Students from engineering, computer science, data science, analytics, and business are all encouraged to participate.

Food and drinks will be provided, and teams will work directly with practitioners throughout the day.
