See What Projects are Bubbling in the Lab

Each semester, students from across campus have the option to pursue their own ideas or take part in an industry-inspired exploration. This semester there are nearly 70 students working on a range of interesting things.

Plan to attend the Lab’s Open House on April 24, 2025 to see these projects in action, ask questions and see demos of new technologies!

We are also always looking for industry partners, advisors and mentors. If you are from the business community and want to get involved, fill out this quick Industry Interest Form.

Spring Projects in the Lab

Industry-driven Projects

These projects engage industry partners and mentors who pose challenges in their industry to set up business problems to solve for multidisciplinary student ideation, concepting and prototyping. There are multiple teams working in each of these areas:

  • Health and Wellness
Better understand how to deliver personalized experiences using AI.
  • Manufacturing
Identify ways AI can optimize trade programs to improve retailer partnerships.
  • Retail
Understand how to engage audiences who are inundated with choices to improve online and store experience with AI.
  • AgTech
Identify ways to improve producer productivity in horticulture with AI.
  • Real Estate
Identify ways to use AR and AI to improve trust and safety in short term rentals.
  • Consumer Goods
Explore ways AI can create a seamless customer experience to build brand engagement and loyalty.
  • Education/Training
Identify ways to leverage VR/AI to lower cost and increase access to improve enterprise training.

Self-directed Projects

These projects are proposed by students and the Lab supports their progress by procuring equipment, subsidizing access to platforms/software, providing mentorship and industry connections, and access to testing environments.

  • Inventory Automation System
Use AR to improve efficiencies in managing inventory.
  • VR Development Environment
Expand on an idea to build new VR applications to manipulate images to produce novel effects.
  • University Wayfinding App
Use AI to build an app to help students plan and manage learning pathways and courses.
  • Implementing Hyperdimensional Computing for Text Generation Tasks
Explore Hyperdimensional computing (HDC) as a potential alternative to the reigning transformer architecture, which is being used by many LLMs such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
  • LiDAR-Based 3D Human Body Volume Measurement and Weight Estimation System
Build an iOS application that utilizes LiDAR sensors to perform 3D human body volume measurement and estimate body weight more accurately.
  • Wildfire Risk AI Tracking
Address wildfire mitigation in high risk environments using drone and thermal imaging innovations.
  • Mental Health Voice Agent
Build an AI agent that is adept at addressing mental health issues and to address loneliness in general.
  • Piano Education in Augmented Reality
Use AR to improve engagement in learning using piano as an example.

Internal Lab Projects

Students work on internal projects for the Lab to build skills and make new connections with other team members. Some current internal Lab projects include:

  • Build an AI model to help companies make better decisions about how to implement AI
  • Explore new use cases for an AR app by integrating AI and testing with customers for market fit.
